Overview
White PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) sheet and rod are semi-finished products made from one of the most versatile fluoropolymers. Developed by DuPont in the 1930s and commercially introduced as Teflon, PTFE has become indispensable in industrial applications due to its unique combination of properties. The material is manufactured through compression molding or extrusion processes, resulting in stock shapes that can be further machined into final components. PTFE products are particularly valued in environments where chemical resistance and thermal stability are paramount. Unlike many plastics, PTFE maintains its properties across a wide temperature range (-200°C to +260°C), making it suitable for both cryogenic and high-temperature applications. The white coloration is natural for virgin PTFE, though colored variants are available for specific identification purposes.
Physical and Chemical Properties
PTFE exhibits exceptional chemical resistance, being virtually inert to all chemicals except molten alkali metals and certain fluorinating agents. This property stems from the strong carbon-fluorine bonds and the complete shielding of the carbon backbone by fluorine atoms. The material's non-stick characteristic, with one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any solid (0.05-0.10), makes it ideal for sliding applications. Thermally, PTFE has excellent stability but relatively high thermal expansion (100-200×10^-6/°C), which must be considered in dimensional designs. Electrically, it serves as an excellent insulator with a dielectric constant of 2.1 and high dielectric strength. Mechanically, PTFE is relatively soft (Shore D50-65) with moderate tensile strength, but shows outstanding creep resistance compared to other thermoplastics.
Main Applications
In the chemical industry, PTFE sheets and rods are machined into gaskets, seals, and linings for reactors and piping systems handling corrosive chemicals. The material's FDA compliance makes it suitable for food processing equipment, particularly in components requiring frequent cleaning or exposure to acidic foods. Electrical applications utilize PTFE's dielectric properties for insulation in high-frequency cables and semiconductor manufacturing. The automotive and aerospace sectors employ PTFE components in fuel systems, bearing pads, and anti-icing systems. In industrial machinery, PTFE rods are commonly turned into bushings, thrust washers, and piston rings where lubrication is problematic. Medical applications include surgical instruments and implantable devices, using medical-grade PTFE that meets USP Class VI biocompatibility standards.
Safety and Storage
While PTFE is biologically inert and non-toxic at normal temperatures, thermal decomposition above 400°C can release hazardous fumes including perfluoroisobutene (PFIB). Adequate ventilation is essential when machining or welding near PTFE materials. Finished products require no special storage conditions but should be kept clean and protected from direct sunlight to prevent surface contamination. When specifying PTFE for food or medical applications, verify that the material meets relevant standards (FDA 21 CFR 177.1550, USP Class VI, or EU 10/2011 for food contact). Industrial-grade PTFE may contain processing aids not suitable for sensitive applications. For high-purity requirements, specify virgin (not reprocessed) PTFE with appropriate certificates of analysis from the supplier.
B2B Procurement Guide
When procuring PTFE sheets and rods, clearly specify dimensional tolerances (standard is ±10% for thickness/diameter), as tighter tolerances increase machining costs. For critical applications, request material certification including melt flow index and impurity content. Consider filled PTFE (with glass, carbon, or bronze) when improved wear resistance or thermal conductivity is needed. Lead times for custom sizes can range from 2-6 weeks, so plan accordingly. Many suppliers offer just-in-time machining services to reduce inventory costs. For large volume purchases (over 500 kg), negotiate pricing based on current fluoropolymer market trends. Quality indicators include uniform color, absence of voids or inclusions, and consistent mechanical properties throughout the material cross-section.
