Overview
UV curing defoamer is a high-performance additive designed for radiation-curable systems. Unlike conventional defoamers, it maintains stability under UV/EB curing conditions without interfering with crosslinking reactions. These defoamers are formulated with modified polysiloxanes or acrylate-functionalized compounds that migrate to bubble surfaces during application, collapsing foam structures before curing. They are essential for defect-free finishes in high-speed industrial coating processes.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Typical UV defoamers exhibit low viscosity (50-500 cP) and specific gravity close to carrier resins for easy incorporation. Their surface tension (18-25 mN/m) is significantly lower than UV resins (30-40 mN/m), enabling effective bubble rupture. Chemically, they resist premature polymerization when exposed to UV light through carefully selected inhibitor packages. Most formulations are solvent-free and comply with VOC regulations, making them suitable for environmentally sensitive applications.
Main Applications
Primary use is in UV-curable wood coatings (parquet, furniture) where bubble-free surfaces are critical for aesthetic quality. They're equally vital in optical fiber coatings, where micro-bubbles would scatter light signals. In graphic arts, these defoamers prevent pinholes in UV flexo/offset inks during high-speed printing. Emerging applications include 3D printing resins, where they improve layer adhesion by eliminating trapped gas bubbles between cured layers.
Safety and Storage
While generally non-hazardous, some formulations may contain sensitizing acrylates. Always consult SDS and use nitrile gloves during handling. Store in original containers at 5-30°C, separating from isocyanates and peroxides. Shelf life typically exceeds 12 months when stored properly. Crystallization may occur below 5°C - warm to room temperature and mix thoroughly before use. Never mix with strong oxidizers due to potential exothermic reactions.
