Overview
Unexpanded perlite is the raw mineral form of volcanic glass mined from deposits worldwide. Unlike its expanded counterpart, it hasn't undergone thermal processing, retaining its original density and crystalline structure. The material consists mainly of amorphous silica (70-75%) with traces of aluminum, potassium, and sodium oxides. Geologically classified as rhyolitic volcanic glass, perlite contains 2-5% bound water which drives its expansion when heated. Compared to expanded perlite, the unexpanded form offers higher mechanical strength but lower insulation value.

Storage requires protection from moisture absorption which could affect expansion properties.
