Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are advanced filtration materials designed to separate particles and dissolved molecules based on size exclusion. Biopharmaceuticals use sterile-grade UF to purify vaccines and separate biomolecules. Industrial applications include oil/water emulsion breaking and paint recovery.
Safety and Storage
UF membranes are generally safe to handle but require protection from physical damage (e.g., folding or sharp objects). Pre-use rinsing removes preservatives like glycerin from new membranes. For storage, keep membranes moist or dry in sealed packaging away from direct sunlight. Freezing should be avoided to prevent pore structure damage. Chemical cleaning solutions must match membrane compatibility—oxidizing agents like chlorine degrade some polymers.
