Overview
Tin is a post-transition metal in group 14 of the periodic table with atomic number 50. It has been used by humans since ancient times, with evidence of tin use dating back to 3000 BCE in bronze production. Today, tin remains an important industrial metal with global production exceeding 300,000 metric tons annually. Tin exists in two allotropic forms: white (β) tin, which is stable at room temperature, and gray (α) tin, which forms below 13.2°C. Main Applications
The largest use of tin is in solder alloys (about 50% of global consumption), particularly in electronics manufacturing where lead-free tin alloys have become standard. Tin plating is another major application, providing corrosion resistance to steel in food cans and other containers (known as tinplate). In metallurgy, tin is a crucial component of bronze (copper-tin alloy) and pewter. Other applications include glass manufacturing (tin oxide coatings for float glass), PVC stabilizers (organotin compounds), and lithium-ion battery anodes. Emerging uses include tin-based perovskite solar cells and nanotechnology applications.
Safety and Storage
Elemental tin metal is considered non-toxic and is approved for food contact applications, which explains its widespread use in food packaging. However, some tin compounds, particularly organotin compounds, can be highly toxic and require special handling precautions. For storage, tin should be kept in a dry environment at room temperature. Special attention should be paid to preventing the tin pest phenomenon in cold climates by maintaining temperatures above 13°C or alloying with small amounts of bismuth or antimony. Tin powder can be flammable and should be stored away from oxidizers.
