Overview
PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) Sheet, commonly referred to as Teflon sheet, is a versatile industrial material prized for its unique combination of properties. The thickened variant offers enhanced mechanical strength and durability compared to standard PTFE sheets, making it suitable for high-pressure or abrasive environments. Its molecular structure provides inherent resistance to almost all chemicals, along with outstanding electrical insulation capabilities. First developed by DuPont in the 1930s, PTFE has become indispensable across multiple industries. The thickened version is manufactured through specialized compression or extrusion processes that increase material density and thickness beyond standard specifications, typically ranging from 3mm to 50mm or more.

Thickened PTFE sheets maintain the fundamental characteristics of standard PTFE while offering improved load-bearing capacity. Its dielectric constant (2.1) and dissipation factor are among the lowest of all solid insulating materials. In aerospace, they're used for fuel system components and insulating washers where reliability under extreme conditions is required.
Safety and Storage
While PTFE is generally safe at normal temperatures, precautions are necessary during processing and in high-temperature applications. When heated above 400°C, PTFE begins decomposing and may release toxic fumes including perfluoroisobutylene (PFIB). Adequate ventilation and proper personal protective equipment should be used during machining or welding near PTFE components. Storage requires protection from UV light and extreme temperatures to prevent degradation. Sheets should be stored flat to avoid warping, with interleaving paper for protection if stacked. Unlike many plastics, PTFE doesn't absorb moisture, but contamination from dust or other materials should be prevented, especially for cleanroom or food-grade applications.
