Overview
High-concentration sulfur dioxide (SO₂) is a critical industrial chemical produced primarily by burning sulfur or sulfide ores. It is a key intermediate in sulfuric acid manufacturing, accounting for over 70% of global SO₂ consumption. In addition to its role in chemical production, SO₂ is used as a preservative (E220) in dried fruits and wines due to its antimicrobial properties. Its reducing ability also makes it valuable in water treatment and pulp bleaching processes.
Physical and Chemical Properties
SO₂ is a dense, colorless gas with a sharp, suffocating odor detectable at 0.3–1 ppm. It liquefies under moderate pressure (at 20°C, 3.2 atm) and is highly soluble in water, forming sulfurous acid (H₂SO₃), a weak dibasic acid. The gas exhibits strong reducing properties, reacting with halogens and oxidizing agents. It also forms sulfites and bisulfites with alkali solutions. Notably, SO₂ does not burn but can sustain combustion in certain conditions by displacing oxygen.
Main Applications
The largest application of high-concentration SO₂ is in the production of sulfuric acid via the Contact Process, where it is catalytically oxidized to SO₃. It is also essential in sulfite pulping for paper manufacturing, removing lignin from wood fibers. In food processing, SO₂ inhibits microbial growth and enzymatic browning. Environmental applications include flue gas desulfurization (FGD) to reduce emissions from power plants. Emerging uses include lithium-sulfur battery research.
Safety and Storage
SO₂ is classified as a toxic gas (ACGIH TLV: 2 ppm). Acute exposure causes respiratory distress, while chronic exposure may lead to bronchitis. Always use chemical-resistant PPE and gas detectors in handling areas. Storage requires DOT-approved cylinders (e.g., UN1079) with brass valves. Avoid contact with moisture to prevent corrosion. Install scrubbers or neutralization systems in leakage-prone areas. Regulatory compliance with EPA, OSHA, and local emission standards is mandatory.
