Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are a type of fuel cell that uses a solid ceramic electrolyte to conduct oxygen ions. SOFC systems require careful thermal management to prevent cracking from thermal shocks. Regular inspections of seals and interconnects are critical to avoid gas leaks. Fuel impurities (e.g., sulfur) must be minimized to prevent anode degradation. Operators should monitor voltage degradation over time, which signals cell aging. Redox cycling (alternating fuel and air exposure) can damage nickel-based anodes, necessitating controlled shutdown procedures.
