Soft and hard perlite are two forms of expanded perlite, a volcanic glass that undergoes thermal expansion to become a lightweight, porous material. Industrial applications include use as a filtration medium in food and pharmaceutical processing, as well as a filler in paints, coatings, and plastics. Perlite's low thermal conductivity also makes it a popular choice for cryogenic insulation in liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage.

Safety and Storage

Perlite is generally considered safe to handle, as it is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. However, dust generated during handling can be irritating to the eyes and respiratory system. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as dust masks and goggles, should be worn when working with perlite in powder form. Storage recommendations include keeping perlite in a dry, well-ventilated area away from moisture. Bulk perlite should be protected from rain and high humidity to prevent compaction. Bags should be stacked no more than five high to prevent crushing and maintain product quality.
