Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum (aluminum oxide), colored by trace amounts of chromium. As a stable mineral, ruby presents minimal health risks. Storage should protect rubies from scratches (despite their hardness, they can scratch softer gems) and sharp impacts that might cause cleavage.
