Overview
Release factors (RFs) are specialized proteins that terminate translation by recognizing stop codons on mRNA. In prokaryotes, RF1 and RF2 distinguish between different stop codons, while eukaryotic eRF1 is universal. These factors interact with the ribosome to hydrolyze the peptidyl-tRNA bond, releasing the completed polypeptide.
