Overview
PVDC emulsion is a colloidal dispersion of polyvinylidene chloride polymer particles in water, stabilized by surfactants. Developed in the 1930s, it revolutionized packaging by providing unprecedented barrier performance. As a coating material, it combines the processability of water-based systems with the exceptional barrier properties of PVDC. The emulsion form allows easy application at high speeds on paper, plastic films, and other substrates without requiring organic solvents.
Physical and Chemical Properties
PVDC emulsions typically contain 40-60% solids by weight, with particle sizes ranging from 50-300 nm. The polymer's crystalline structure provides outstanding barrier properties, with oxygen transmission rates as low as 0.1-5 cc/m²/day/atm. Key characteristics include excellent resistance to oils, greases, and most chemicals except strong bases. When dried, films exhibit high tensile strength (30-50 MPa) and moderate flexibility (100-300% elongation). The emulsion pH is usually maintained between 2-4 for stability.
Main Applications
Approximately 70% of PVDC emulsions are used in food packaging, particularly for snack foods, cheese, and meat products where extended shelf life is critical. Multi-layer structures often combine PVDC with PET or PP films. In pharmaceuticals, the material protects moisture-sensitive drugs in blister packs. Industrial applications include agricultural chemical packaging and electronic component protection. Some specialty grades are formulated for heat-sealable coatings or as adhesive layers in laminate structures.
Safety and Storage
While PVDC emulsions are generally safe to handle at room temperature, decomposition above 180°C can release hydrogen chloride gas. Facilities should have adequate ventilation and avoid contact with strong alkalis. Proper storage requires maintaining temperatures above 5°C to prevent freezing damage and below 30°C to avoid accelerated aging. Unopened containers typically have a 6-12 month shelf life. Agitation before use is recommended to ensure uniform dispersion.
