Overview

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) scrap consists of manufacturing offcuts, rejected parts, or post-consumer waste from this high-performance fluoropolymer. Known commercially as Teflon, PTFE scrap retains the base material's exceptional properties, including non-reactivity and thermal resistance. Recycling PTFE scrap is economically and environmentally significant, reducing waste in industries like chemical processing, aerospace, and electronics. The material is typically reprocessed into granular or powdered forms for reuse in coatings, composites, or as filler material.

Physical and Chemical Properties

Its low coefficient of friction (0.05–0.10) and dielectric properties remain intact. The material's non-stick characteristics and UV resistance make scrap suitable for reprocessing into weather-resistant products. However, mechanical properties like tensile strength may degrade slightly depending on the scrap's origin and previous usage conditions.

Main Applications

Reprocessed PTFE scrap is commonly used as filler in composites to enhance lubricity and chemical resistance in bearings, gaskets, and seals. Fine powders are blended with inks or coatings for non-stick surfaces in cookware or industrial equipment. In construction, shredded PTFE scrap serves as a friction-reducing additive in architectural membranes. The electronics industry utilizes cleaned scrap for insulating components, while the automotive sector incorporates it into low-friction brake components and fuel system parts.

Safety and Storage

PTFE scrap requires standard polymer storage precautions: keep dry and segregated from contaminants. While stable at room temperature, overheating during processing (above 400°C) may release hazardous fumes including perfluoroisobutene (PFIB). Workers handling powdered scrap should use PPE to prevent respiratory irritation. Storage areas must be well-ventilated and away from ignition sources. Bulk scrap should be packaged in sealed containers to prevent electrostatic charging and dust dispersion.
