Pretreatment Molecular Sieve

Updated: 2026-08-06

Overview

Molecular sieves for pretreatment are synthetic crystalline aluminosilicates engineered with uniform micropores. They serve as selective adsorbents to remove water, CO₂, and other impurities from gases and liquids prior to downstream processes. Their high thermal stability (up to 1000°C) and regenerability make them cost-effective for industrial applications. Unlike silica gel, pretreatment molecular sieves offer superior adsorption capacity at low humidity levels (<10% RH). They are classified by pore size (e.g., 3Å for water removal, 4Å for small molecules), with standardized bead or pellet forms for packed bed systems.

Physical and Chemical Properties

Pretreatment molecular sieves exhibit a rigid three-dimensional structure with pore diameters precisely controlled during synthesis. The 3Å type excludes molecules larger than water (2.8Å), while 4Å variants adsorb CO₂ (3.3Å) and light hydrocarbons. Their adsorption is exothermic, releasing 3300–4200 kJ/kg of water adsorbed. Key metrics include static water adsorption (>20% wt/wt at 25°C/10% RH) and bulk crush strength (>30N/bead). The materials are chemically inert to most solvents but degrade in strong acids or bases. Thermal regeneration at 200–350°C under vacuum or purge gas restores 95%+ capacity.

Main Applications

In natural gas processing, 3Å sieves achieve dew points below -100°C, preventing hydrate formation. Petrochemical plants use 4Å types to remove sulfur compounds and moisture from feedstocks. Compressed air systems rely on them for ISO 8573-1 Class 1 air quality (<-70°C dew point). Emerging applications include ethanol dehydration for biofuels and insulating glass desiccant fills. Their selectivity also enables CO₂ removal in biogas upgrading and hydrogen purification for fuel cells. Lifetime ranges from 3–10 years depending on regeneration cycles and contaminant loads.

Safety and Storage

While non-flammable and non-toxic, molecular sieve dust may cause mechanical irritation to eyes and respiratory tract. NIOSH-approved dust masks and goggles are recommended during handling. Spent sieves may release adsorbed volatile compounds during regeneration, requiring proper ventilation. Storage requires double-layer moisture-proof packaging with desiccant bags. Opened containers should be resealed immediately or transferred to dry-air purged hoppers. Bulk shipments typically use 25kg fiber drums or 1-ton super sacks with polyethylene liners.

B2B Procurement Guide

Industrial buyers should verify: 1) Pore size certification (ASTM D4365), 2) Bulk density (0.65–0.75 g/cm³ optimal for flow), and 3) Attrition resistance (>98% whole beads after ASTM durability testing). Sample testing under actual process conditions is advised. Leading manufacturers include UOP Honeywell, Zeochem, and CECA Arkema. MOQ for customized grades is typically 5–10 metric tons. Spot prices fluctuate with natural gas and sodium hydroxide feedstock costs. Long-term contracts often include regeneration service agreements.
