Overview
Polyethylene (PE) pipe is a thermoplastic piping system manufactured through extrusion of polyethylene resins. First commercialized in the 1950s, it has become the material of choice for pressure piping applications due to its unique combination of flexibility, joint integrity (via heat fusion), and resistance to corrosion and abrasion. PE pipe is classified as non-hazardous under normal handling conditions. However, thermal welding operations require ventilation to avoid inhalation of pyrolysis byproducts (carbon monoxide, formaldehyde). Always follow ASTM F2620 for proper fusion procedures. Storage should prevent deformation—pipes must be supported evenly and stacked no higher than manufacturer recommendations. Protect from direct sunlight during prolonged outdoor storage. For pressure applications, always conduct hydrostatic testing per ISO 4427 standards before commissioning.
