Overview
Polybutene (PB) is a synthetic polymer derived from butene monomers, primarily used in industrial and construction applications. It exists in various forms, including viscous liquids and semi-crystalline solids, depending on molecular weight. PB is valued for its balance of flexibility, durability, and resistance to chemicals and creep. First commercialized in the 1970s, PB gained prominence as a piping material due to its weldability and long-term stability. Chemically, PB is inert to most acids, alkalis, and solvents, though it swells in aromatic hydrocarbons. It has low oxygen permeability, a key advantage for piping systems. Main Applications
The largest application of PB is in pressure piping systems, particularly for underfloor heating and industrial fluid transport. Its thermal stability (up to 95°C continuously) and flexibility simplify installation compared to rigid materials like copper. PB also serves as a modifier in adhesives and sealants, enhancing tack and elasticity. In lubricants, it acts as a thickener, while in coatings, it improves moisture resistance. Specialty grades are used in medical tubing and food packaging films due to compliance with FDA regulations.
Safety and Storage
Polybutene is generally non-toxic but may cause mild skin or eye irritation upon prolonged contact. Processing at high temperatures can release volatile compounds, requiring adequate ventilation. Spills should be contained with inert absorbents. Storage recommendations include keeping PB in original containers away from heat sources and oxidizers. Solid grades should be protected from UV exposure to prevent degradation. Shelf life typically exceeds two years when stored below 30°C.
