Overview
Polyethylene (PE) is the most commonly produced plastic globally, accounting for about 34% of the total plastics market. First synthesized in 1898 and commercialized in the 1930s, PE's molecular structure consists of long hydrocarbon chains. Its production uses either high-pressure (for LDPE) or low-pressure (for HDPE) processes with ethylene monomers. PE is classified by density: Low-Density PE (LDPE) is flexible and used for films, while High-Density PE (HDPE) offers rigidity for bottles and pipes. Environmental factors like UV exposure degrade PE over time unless stabilized with additives. While flammable (ignition temperature ~350°C), PE burns cleanly without toxic fumes. Its water absorption rate is <0.01%, ensuring dimensional stability in humid conditions.
Main Applications
Packaging dominates PE use, with LDPE films for grocery bags and HDPE for milk jugs. In construction, HDPE pipes resist corrosion in water/gas distribution. Medical applications include sterile packaging and UHMWPE joint replacements. Industrial uses encompass chemical tanks, cable sheathing, and geomembranes. Consumer goods range from toys to kitchenware. Recycled PE finds second life in outdoor furniture and composite lumber. Specialty grades serve as bulletproof vests (Dyneema®) and artificial ice rinks.
Safety and Storage
PE is non-toxic and FDA-approved for food contact, but additives (e.g., colorants) may require verification. Molten PE poses burn risks and releases volatile compounds—adequate ventilation is essential during processing. Store PE pellets or products away from heat sources and oxidizing agents. Bulk storage should avoid compaction to prevent pellet fusion. Shelf life is indefinite if protected from direct sunlight. For recycling, separate by resin code (#2 for HDPE, #4 for LDPE).
