Phosgene-based polycarbonate (PC) is a high-molecular-weight thermoplastic synthesized through the interfacial polymerization of bisphenol-A (BPA) and phosgene. While the final PC polymer is non-toxic, phosgene (COCl2) used in production is a lethal gas. Facilities must adhere to OSHA/NIOSH exposure limits (0.1 ppm). Residual phosgene in pellets is negligible but suppliers must provide certificates of analysis. Store PC pellets in moisture-proof packaging at <30°C to prevent hydrolysis. Processors should dry pellets (120°C, 4 hours) before extrusion to avoid bubble formation. Recycled PC requires testing for molecular weight degradation.
