Overview
Horticultural perlite is a processed volcanic mineral expanded by heat to form lightweight, porous granules. Its unique structure makes it a versatile substrate in agriculture, hydroponics, and landscaping. Unlike raw perlite, the expanded form used in horticulture undergoes heating at 900°C, causing it to 'pop' like popcorn and increase in volume up to 20 times. First commercialized in the 1940s, perlite is now a staple in professional growing media due to its inert nature and ability to balance water retention and aeration. Main Applications

It prevents soil compaction in container nurseries and greenhouses, particularly for plants like succulents and orchids requiring fast drainage. Hydroponic systems use it as a standalone medium for lettuce and herb production. Beyond agriculture, perlite serves as an insulator in construction and a filter aid in food processing. Its fire-resistant properties make it suitable for refractory bricks. In niche applications, it's used as a carrier for fertilizers and pesticides due to its high surface area.
