PCD inserts are composite cutting tools consisting of a synthetic polycrystalline diamond layer (typically 0.5-2mm thick) bonded to a tungsten carbide substrate through high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) sintering. This combination merges diamond's extreme hardness with carbide's toughness, creating tools that outperform conventional carbide or ceramic inserts in specific applications. First developed in the 1970s, PCD technology has become essential for modern high-performance machining. Unlike natural single-crystal diamonds, the polycrystalline structure of PCD provides isotropic properties with no cleavage planes, making it more resistant to chipping.
