Polybutene-1 (PB-1) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer belonging to the polyolefin family. Produced through the polymerization of 1-butene, it occupies a unique position between polyethylene and polypropylene in terms of performance characteristics. First commercialized in the 1960s, PB-1 has gained recognition for its exceptional long-term hydrostatic strength and flexibility retention. The material exists in three crystalline forms (I, II, and III), with Form I being the most stable and commercially important. In packaging, PB-1 is used as a sealant layer in multilayer films, offering superior hot tack and heat seal properties. Other applications include adhesives (where it improves tack and viscosity), consumer goods, and industrial components requiring chemical resistance. Specialty grades are employed in medical tubing and wire insulation applications.
