Paper Fastener
Overview
A paper fastener, also known as a brad or split pin, is a small metal fastener designed to hold sheets of paper together securely. It consists of two prongs that pierce through the paper and are then bent outward to lock the sheets in place. Unlike staples or clips, paper fasteners are reusable and leave minimal damage to documents. These fasteners are widely used in offices, schools, and crafting due to their simplicity and effectiveness. They are particularly useful for binding reports, presentations, or art projects where temporary or semi-permanent binding is required. The design has remained largely unchanged since its invention, proving its enduring practicality.
Product Features
Paper fasteners are characterized by their two-pronged structure, which provides a firm grip on stacked sheets. The prongs are typically made of brass, stainless steel, or nickel-plated metal to resist corrosion and ensure longevity. Some variants feature decorative heads, adding aesthetic value while maintaining functionality. The length of the prongs varies depending on the thickness of the materials to be fastened. Standard sizes range from 10mm to 25mm, accommodating anywhere from a few sheets to small stacks of paper. The reusable nature of paper fasteners makes them an eco-friendly alternative to disposable binding methods.
Main Uses
Paper fasteners are primarily used in office and educational settings for organizing and binding documents. They are ideal for securing loose sheets, creating flip charts, or assembling booklets. In crafting, they serve as pivots for movable parts in DIY projects, such as paper puppets or spinning wheels. Their lightweight and non-permanent hold make them suitable for temporary binding, allowing easy addition or removal of pages. Unlike adhesives or staples, paper fasteners do not damage the paper, making them a preferred choice for archival or presentation materials.
Culture and Development
The paper fastener was developed in the late 19th century as a practical solution for document binding. Before its invention, people relied on stitching, glue, or cumbersome clips, which were less convenient for frequent edits. The introduction of the two-pronged design revolutionized office organization by offering a quick, reusable alternative. Over time, paper fasteners have evolved to include decorative variants, catering to both functional and aesthetic needs. Despite the rise of digital documentation, they remain a staple in physical file management, reflecting their timeless utility.
B2B Procurement Guide
When procuring paper fasteners in bulk for business use, consider the material quality and intended application. Brass or stainless steel fasteners are recommended for durability and resistance to rust, especially in humid environments. Verify the prong length to ensure compatibility with the document thickness your business typically handles. For cost efficiency, bulk purchases of 1,000 units or more often yield significant savings. Reputable suppliers may offer customization options, such as branded heads or unique finishes, to align with corporate branding. Always request samples to test functionality before large-scale orders.
