Overview
An incremental encoder is an electromechanical device that measures rotational movement by generating digital pulses corresponding to angular displacement. Unlike absolute encoders, it does not track position when powered off but provides relative movement data, making it cost-effective for speed and direction detection. These encoders consist of a rotating disk with alternating opaque and transparent segments, a light source, and a photodetector. As the disk rotates, light pulses are converted into electrical signals, with the pulse count proportional to the rotation angle.
