One-component Polyurethane
Overview
One-component Polyurethane (1K PU) is a reactive prepolymer that cures upon exposure to atmospheric moisture, forming a durable elastomer. Unlike two-component systems, it requires no mixing, simplifying application. It is widely favored in industries requiring robust sealing, bonding, or coating solutions. Its versatility stems from adjustable formulations, allowing customization for specific hardness, flexibility, or curing speed.
Physical and Chemical Properties
One-component Polyurethane exhibits high tensile strength (up to 10 MPa) and elongation (200-600%), making it ideal for dynamic joints. It resists weathering, oils, and mild chemicals. The material cures via moisture-induced crosslinking, typically achieving full cure in 24-72 hours, depending on humidity and layer thickness. Uncured, it remains stable in sealed containers for 6-12 months.
Main Applications
In construction, it seals expansion joints, roofs, and concrete cracks due to its waterproofing capabilities. Automotive uses include windshield adhesives and underbody coatings. Industrial applications span gaskets, machinery damping, and protective coatings. Its adhesion to diverse substrates (metal, plastic, wood) expands utility across sectors.
Safety and Storage
Uncured polyurethane contains isocyanates, which may cause respiratory or skin irritation. Use NIOSH-approved respirators and nitrile gloves during handling. Store containers upright to prevent leakage. Partially used containers should be purged with dry nitrogen and resealed to prolong shelf life.
