Overview
Neodymium (Nd) is a rare earth metal belonging to the lanthanide series, with atomic number 60. It was discovered in 1885 by Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach. Neodymium is known for its strong magnetic properties, making it a critical component in high-performance permanent magnets, often alloyed with iron and boron (NdFeB magnets). Main Applications
Neodymium is primarily used in neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets, which are the strongest permanent magnets available. These magnets are essential in electric motors, wind turbines, hard disk drives, and headphones. Other applications include laser crystals (neodymium-doped YAG lasers), glass coloring (purple and red hues), and catalysts for polymerization reactions. Neodymium compounds are also used in ceramic capacitors and fluorescent lighting.
Safety and Storage
Neodymium metal is highly reactive and flammable, especially in powder form. It must be stored under mineral oil or inert gas (argon or nitrogen) to prevent oxidation. Handling requires gloves, goggles, and protective clothing to avoid contact with skin or eyes. In case of fire, use dry sand or Class D extinguishers; water must not be used due to the risk of hydrogen gas release. Spills should be contained and cleaned up with non-reactive absorbents.
