Nitrogen Separation and Purification
Overview
Nitrogen separation and purification is an essential industrial process that isolates nitrogen gas from atmospheric air or other gas mixtures. The most common methods include pressure swing adsorption (PSA), membrane separation, and cryogenic distillation, each offering different purity levels and throughput capacities. PSA systems use specialized adsorbents to preferentially capture oxygen and other gases, allowing nitrogen to pass through. Membrane systems separate gases based on differential permeation rates through polymer membranes. Cryogenic distillation, the most energy-intensive method, produces the highest purity nitrogen (up to 99.999%) by liquefying air and fractionally distilling its components.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Nitrogen (N2) is a diatomic gas comprising 78% of Earth's atmosphere. Its strong triple bond gives nitrogen exceptional stability and inertness, making it valuable for applications requiring non-reactive environments. The gas is colorless, odorless, and tasteless with a density slightly less than air. At standard conditions, nitrogen exists as a gas but can be liquefied at -195.8°C. The liquid phase is commonly used in cryogenic applications. Nitrogen's solubility in water decreases with temperature, a property exploited in some purification processes. Its thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity make it useful in heat transfer applications.

Emerging applications include energy storage systems and enhanced oil recovery techniques where nitrogen's inert properties prevent unwanted reactions.
Safety and Storage
While nitrogen itself is non-toxic, it presents significant asphyxiation hazards in confined spaces as it can displace breathable oxygen. Proper ventilation and oxygen monitoring are essential in areas where nitrogen is stored or used. Compressed nitrogen cylinders should be secured upright and protected from physical damage. Storage areas must be well-ventilated and away from heat sources. Liquid nitrogen requires specialized cryogenic containers with pressure relief valves to handle boil-off gas. Personnel handling liquid nitrogen must use appropriate PPE including face shields and cryogenic gloves.
