Overview
Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitors (MLCCs) are surface-mount devices consisting of alternating layers of ceramic dielectric and metal electrodes. They dominate the capacitor market due to their reliability, compactness (down to 0201 size), and versatility across temperature ranges. Modern MLCCs can achieve capacitances up to 100μF in packages smaller than 1mm³. First commercialized in the 1960s, MLCCs now account for over 1 trillion units produced annually. They are classified by dielectric materials: Class I (NPO) for stability and Class II (X7R, Y5V) for higher volumetric efficiency. Structure and Working Principle
MLCCs are constructed by stacking hundreds of thin ceramic layers (1–10μm thick) coated with palladium or nickel electrode inks. These layers are co-fired at 1,200–1,400°C to form a monolithic block. External terminals are plated with nickel/tin for solderability. Multilayering exponentially increases A while maintaining small d, enabling high capacitance in tiny volumes. The dielectric polarization under electric fields enables energy storage.

Voltage derating (using 50–80% of rated voltage) extends service life, especially for high-K dielectrics prone to aging. Storage in dry environments (<40% RH) prevents terminal oxidation. Periodic electrical testing (insulation resistance, capacitance drift) is recommended for critical applications.
