Overview
Molded PTFE sheets are manufactured by compressing PTFE resin powder under high pressure and sintering it at high temperatures. This process creates a dense, homogeneous material with superior mechanical properties compared to skived PTFE films. The sheets are valued for their versatility in harsh environments, combining thermal stability with resistance to nearly all chemicals, including acids, bases, and solvents. The food industry uses FDA-compliant grades for conveyor belts and release sheets, leveraging their non-stick properties. Electrically, PTFE sheets insulate high-voltage cables and microwave components. Industrial applications include bearings for corrosive environments and anti-stick surfaces for molding equipment. Medical-grade sheets are employed in surgical devices and implants for biocompatibility.
Safety and Storage
While PTFE is biologically inert in its solid form, overheating (>260°C) can release toxic fumes including perfluoroisobutylene (PFIB). Adequate ventilation is critical during machining or welding near PTFE components. Storage requires protection from dust and direct sunlight to prevent surface contamination. For industrial hygiene, dust generated during cutting or sanding should be controlled via local exhaust ventilation. Disposal follows local regulations for fluoropolymers, with incineration at specialized facilities recommended to prevent emissions of hydrogen fluoride (HF).
