Overview
Modified linear polymer SBS is a thermoplastic elastomer derived from styrene and butadiene monomers. Its block copolymer structure combines the rigidity of polystyrene with the elasticity of polybutadiene, making it highly versatile for industrial applications. Unlike conventional SBS, modified grades exhibit enhanced properties such as improved thermal stability, adhesion, or compatibility with specific matrices. The material's dual-phase morphology provides unique viscoelastic behavior, with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of -80°C for the butadiene segment and +100°C for the styrene phase. It's the dominant polymer for high-performance road surfaces globally. For adhesives, especially hot-melt types, modified SBS offers excellent tack and peel strength. Other uses include waterproofing membranes (30–40% SBS content), shoe soles (providing slip resistance), and impact modifiers for plastics like PP and PS.

SBS is classified as non-hazardous under GHS standards. Processors should use local exhaust ventilation when heating above 180°C to prevent volatile emissions. No special PPE is required for handling at room temperature. Storage life is typically 24 months in original packaging. Bulk storage silos should maintain relative humidity below 60%. Pellets are prone to static buildup; antistatic measures are recommended during pneumatic conveying.
