Overview
Medium Density Polyethylene (MDPE) is a grade of polyethylene characterized by its balanced mechanical properties, positioned between low-density (LDPE) and high-density (HDPE) variants. Developed in the 1950s, MDPE combines moderate tensile strength with superior stress-crack resistance, making it ideal for applications requiring both durability and flexibility. Produced via copolymerization of ethylene with alpha-olefins, MDPE typically contains short-chain branching that differentiates it from linear HDPE. Its density range of 0.926–0.940 g/cm³ gives it distinct processing advantages in extrusion and blow molding applications compared to other PE grades.
Physical and Chemical Properties
MDPE exhibits a unique combination of properties including higher environmental stress-crack resistance (ESCR) than HDPE, better stiffness than LDPE, and improved low-temperature toughness. Its crystalline structure ranges between 50–70%, contributing to its dimensional stability under load. Chemically, MDPE resists most acids, alkalis, and organic solvents at room temperature, though it swells in chlorinated hydrocarbons. The material maintains useful mechanical properties from -50°C to +80°C, with short-term peak tolerance up to 100°C. UV stabilization is often required for outdoor applications to prevent degradation.
Main Applications
The gas distribution industry extensively uses MDPE for piping systems due to its excellent slow crack growth resistance and fusion weldability. DN80–DN315 mm MDPE pipes dominate municipal gas networks in many regions, often colored yellow or orange for identification. In packaging, MDPE films provide superior puncture resistance for heavy-duty sacks and liners. Rotomolded MDPE finds use in chemical tanks and industrial containers, while injection-molded applications include closures and industrial parts requiring impact resistance.
Safety and Storage
As a thermoplastic, MDPE presents minimal hazards at ambient temperatures but releases flammable vapors when heated above 300°C. Proper ventilation is essential during thermal processing to prevent accumulation of decomposition products. Granules should be stored in original packaging below 40°C with relative humidity under 80%. Bulk storage requires rotation to prevent compaction. Electrostatic charges may develop during handling, necessitating grounded equipment when processing powdered forms.
