Overview
Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is a thermoplastic polymer produced via high-pressure polymerization of ethylene. Its branched molecular structure gives it unique flexibility and processability, making it a staple in the plastics industry. First commercialized in the 1930s, LDPE remains widely used due to its balance of cost, performance, and versatility. Physical and Chemical Properties
LDPE exhibits a density range of 0.910–0.940 g/cm³, lower than other polyethylene variants like HDPE. Its melting point (105–115°C) allows for easy thermoforming, while its chemical inertness resists acids, alkalis, and alcohols. The material's low crystallinity contributes to its transparency and flexibility. However, it has lower tensile strength and higher gas permeability compared to linear polyethylenes, limiting use in high-stress or barrier applications.

Over 55% of global LDPE production is used for packaging, including shrink wraps, grocery bags, and food containers. Its sealability and FDA compliance make it ideal for perishable goods packaging. Other key uses include agricultural films, wire and cable insulation, and disposable medical products. Injection-molded LDPE appears in toys, lids, and laboratory equipment due to its impact resistance.
Safety and Storage
LDPE is non-toxic in its solid form and approved for food contact. However, processing at temperatures above 200°C may release volatile compounds requiring ventilation. Pellets should be stored in moisture-proof packaging below 40°C to prevent clumping. Bulk storage requires protection from UV exposure to avoid premature degradation. Fire safety measures are essential as LDPE is combustible.
