Overview
Lithium-based bentonite is a modified form of natural bentonite clay, where sodium or calcium ions are partially replaced with lithium ions through chemical activation. This treatment enhances its colloidal and binding properties, making it superior to conventional bentonite in high-temperature applications. The mineral originates from volcanic ash deposits and is processed to achieve consistent lithium content. Its unique structure allows for wide industrial use, particularly where thermal stability and viscosity control are critical.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Lithium-based bentonite exhibits a layered alumina-silicate structure with exchangeable lithium ions. Its hallmark property is the ability to swell up to 10–15 times its original volume when hydrated, forming thixotropic gels. The lithium modification increases its cation exchange capacity (CEC) to 80–120 meq/100g. Thermally, it retains stability up to 600°C, outperforming sodium bentonite in foundry applications. The powder has a pH of 8.5–10.5 in water suspensions and demonstrates pseudoplastic flow behavior under shear stress.

In foundries, lithium bentonite serves as a premium sand binder for molding cores and surfaces, reducing burn-on defects in metal casting. Its high hot strength minimizes veining in iron and steel castings. The oil and gas industry utilizes it in drilling fluids to stabilize boreholes and control filtration. As a rheological additive in paints and coatings, it prevents sagging while maintaining brushability. Emerging applications include lithium-ion battery components and geopolymer cements.
Safety and Storage
While non-hazardous, prolonged inhalation of dust may cause respiratory irritation. NIOSH-approved respirators are recommended during bulk handling. Storage requires dry conditions (<50% humidity) to prevent premature swelling; sealed super sacks or moisture-barrier bags are ideal. Spills should be contained with inert absorbents. Dispose of waste according to local mineral processing regulations. Lithium bentonite is not classified as flammable or reactive under normal conditions.
