Lead-acid batteries offer several advantages that maintain their market position despite newer technologies. They provide excellent high-rate discharge capability, making them ideal for automotive starter applications. Their relatively simple construction contributes to lower manufacturing costs compared to lithium-ion alternatives. These batteries also demonstrate good performance across a wide temperature range and have well-established recycling processes. However, they are heavier than modern alternatives and require proper maintenance to prevent sulfation and water loss in flooded types.
Application Areas
The automotive industry remains the largest consumer of lead-acid batteries, particularly for starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) applications. They're also extensively used in uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) for critical infrastructure, telecommunications, and data centers. Renewable energy systems frequently employ deep-cycle lead-acid batteries for energy storage. Other applications include electric forklifts, marine equipment, and backup power for industrial machinery. Their affordability and reliability make them a preferred choice for many stationary power applications.
Maintenance and Precautions
Proper maintenance significantly extends lead-acid battery life. For flooded types, regularly check electrolyte levels and top up with distilled water when needed. Keep terminals clean and apply anti-corrosion grease to prevent buildup. Avoid deep discharges whenever possible, as this accelerates plate sulfation. Store batteries in a cool, dry place and maintain charge during storage. When handling, wear protective equipment as the sulfuric acid electrolyte is corrosive. Always charge in well-ventilated areas to disperse potentially explosive hydrogen gas.
