Overview
Laminated Material Special PP is a modified polypropylene formulation optimized for bonding layers in multi-material composites. Unlike standard PP, it incorporates additives to enhance surface energy and promote adhesion to substrates like paper, foil, or textiles. The material is widely used in industries requiring durable, lightweight laminates with aesthetic appeal. Developed to address delamination issues in high-stress environments, this PP grade undergoes specialized polymerization and compounding processes. Its molecular structure balances flexibility and rigidity, ensuring compatibility with both extrusion coating and adhesive lamination techniques.
Physical and Chemical Properties
This PP variant exhibits a melt flow index (MFI) of 10-25 g/10min (230°C/2.16kg), suitable for uniform coating applications. Its crystallinity ranges between 50-60%, contributing to dimensional stability during thermal processing. The material’s surface tension is modified to >38 dynes/cm for improved wettability. Chemically, it resists acids, alkalis, and most organic solvents below 80°C. The modified polymer chains include polar groups (e.g., maleic anhydride grafts) that enable covalent bonding with polar substrates. Thermal degradation begins at 260°C, with a Vicat softening point of 150-155°C.
Main Applications
In packaging, this PP is the base layer for stand-up pouches and retortable food containers due to its heat-seal performance. The automotive sector uses it for interior trim laminates, where it bonds fabric to ABS or PP substrates without additional adhesives. Decorative applications include synthetic wood veneers and printed laminates for furniture. Its low odor emission and compliance with EU 10/2011 food contact regulations make it suitable for microwaveable food trays. Emerging uses include solar panel backsheets and medical packaging.
Safety and Storage
While non-hazardous under normal conditions, processing above 200°C may release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Adequate ventilation is recommended during extrusion or hot pressing. NFPA ratings are Health 1, Flammability 1, Reactivity 0. Pellets should be stored in original packaging at <30°C and <60% relative humidity. Prolonged exposure to humid environments (>24 hours) requires pre-drying at 80°C for 2-4 hours before processing to prevent bubbling. Shelf life is typically 12 months from manufacture when stored properly.
B2B Procurement Guide
Key specifications to confirm include MFI variance (±2g/10min), peel strength (>3N/15mm width), and FDA compliance if for food contact. For large orders (>20MT), request batch testing reports for thermal stability (OIT >30min at 190°C) and color consistency (Delta E <1.5). Suppliers often provide technical support for processing parameters—typical extrusion temperatures are 190-220°C with chill roll settings at 15-25°C. Consider regional logistics: pellets are commonly shipped in 25kg bags or 1MT jumbo bags with moisture barrier liners.
