Overview
Interelectrode capacitance is an unavoidable parasitic capacitance that exists between the electrodes of electronic components such as vacuum tubes, transistors, and other multi-electrode devices. This capacitance forms because any two conductors separated by an insulator (including vacuum) create a capacitive effect. In tube amplifiers, it primarily occurs between the grid and plate, grid and cathode, or plate and cathode. While small in magnitude (typically picofarads), interelectrode capacitance becomes significant at high frequencies, potentially causing unwanted feedback, signal coupling, or frequency response limitations. Engineers must account for this phenomenon during circuit design, particularly in radio frequency (RF) and high-speed applications where it can degrade performance.

The physical structure causing interelectrode capacitance consists of conductive electrodes separated by dielectric material or vacuum. In vacuum tubes, the metal grid, plate, and cathode form parallel conductive surfaces, while in transistors, it occurs between terminals like gate-drain or base-collector. The capacitance value depends on the electrode surface area, separation distance, and dielectric properties. While interelectrode capacitance itself doesn't require maintenance, its effects necessitate design precautions. In tube circuits, using grounded metal shields between electrodes or selecting tubes with low Cgp values helps prevent oscillation. For semiconductor devices, proper PCB layout with minimized trace lengths and ground planes reduces overall circuit capacitance.
