Injection Grade Polyoxymethylene

Updated: 2026-08-03

Overview

Injection-grade polyoxymethylene (POM) is a premium engineering thermoplastic optimized for injection molding processes. As a semi-crystalline polymer, it offers exceptional dimensional stability and mechanical properties, making it a preferred material for precision components in demanding industries. Developed commercially in the 1960s, POM is synthesized through polymerization of formaldehyde. The injection-grade variant undergoes stringent quality control to ensure consistent flow characteristics, minimal impurities, and uniform pellet size for reliable processing.

Physical and Chemical Properties

POM exhibits a unique combination of high tensile strength (60–70 MPa) and impact resistance, even at low temperatures. Its low coefficient of friction (0.1–0.3) rivals some lubricated metals, enabling self-lubricating applications. The material demonstrates excellent resistance to hydrocarbons, alcohols, and weak acids but degrades in strong acids/alkalis. UV stabilizers are often added for outdoor use. Thermal stability is maintained up to 90°C continuously, with short-term tolerance to 140°C.

Main Applications

Automotive manufacturers utilize injection-grade POM for fuel system components, seatbelt mechanisms, and window regulators due to its fatigue resistance. In consumer electronics, it's used in gear assemblies for printers and camera mechanisms. Medical applications include insulin pens and surgical instrument handles, where FDA-compliant grades are required. Industrial uses encompass conveyor system parts and plumbing fittings, capitalizing on POM's creep resistance and low water absorption.

Safety and Storage

POM pellets require dry storage (≤0.2% moisture) to prevent hydrolysis during processing. Bulk containers should be resealed immediately after use and stored away from oxidizing agents. Processing above 200°C may release formaldehyde gas, necessitating adequate ventilation. Finished products are generally safe for skin contact, but dust from machining operations requires PPE. Fire hazards are moderate—combustion produces formaldehyde and carbon monoxide.

B2B Procurement Guide

Industrial buyers should verify ISO 9988 or ASTM D4181 certification for material consistency. Key specifications include melt flow rate (typically 2–25 g/10 min), filler content (glass fiber, PTFE, etc.), and UV stabilization requirements. For high-volume procurement (20+ tons), negotiate with direct polymer producers rather than distributors. Lead times for custom formulations can exceed 8 weeks. Sample testing under actual production conditions is strongly recommended before large orders.
