Overview
Impact Modified PBT is an engineered thermoplastic that combines polybutylene terephthalate's inherent mechanical strength and chemical resistance with enhanced toughness through the addition of impact modifiers. This modification typically involves elastomeric additives or core-shell particles that absorb and dissipate impact energy. The material retains PBT's excellent dimensional stability and electrical properties while significantly improving resistance to cracking or breaking under mechanical stress. It bridges the gap between standard PBT and more expensive impact-resistant polymers, offering a cost-effective solution for demanding applications.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Impact Modified PBT exhibits a unique combination of properties including notched Izod impact strengths typically ranging from 50-150 J/m, compared to 5-20 J/m for unmodified PBT. The material maintains PBT's heat resistance (HDT up to 150°C) and flame retardancy (UL94 ratings achievable). Chemical resistance remains excellent against fuels, oils, and most solvents, though strong acids and bases should be avoided. The modification process slightly reduces stiffness (tensile modulus 1.5-2.5 GPa) compared to standard PBT while dramatically improving elongation at break (from 5% to over 100% in some grades).

Safety and Storage
As with most engineering thermoplastics, Impact Modified PBT presents low toxicity under normal handling conditions. Processing at high temperatures may release trace amounts of decomposition products requiring adequate ventilation. Dust control measures are recommended during handling of pellets or regrind material. Proper storage in moisture-proof containers at temperatures below 30°C is essential to prevent moisture absorption, which can affect processing and final properties. Drying before processing (typically 2-4 hours at 120°C) is required if material has absorbed significant moisture.
