Overview
Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG) is a widely used surface finish in the electronics industry, particularly for printed circuit boards (PCBs). It involves depositing a thin layer of gold over a nickel-phosphorus alloy through an autocatalytic chemical process. ENIG provides a flat, solderable surface ideal for fine-pitch components and wire bonding. The finish is favored for its excellent corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and long shelf life. Unlike electroplated gold, ENIG does not require an external electrical current, making it suitable for complex PCB designs. Its uniformity and reliability make it a preferred choice for high-performance applications.
Physical and Chemical Properties
ENIG consists of two primary layers: an electroless nickel layer (typically 3-6µm thick) and a thin immersion gold layer (0.05-0.10µm). The nickel layer acts as a diffusion barrier, preventing copper migration, while the gold layer protects against oxidation and ensures solderability. The nickel-phosphorus alloy (usually 6-9% phosphorus) provides hardness and wear resistance. The immersion gold process displaces nickel atoms with gold, resulting in a pure gold surface. This combination offers excellent thermal stability, withstanding temperatures up to 350°C during soldering processes.
Main Applications
ENIG is extensively used in high-reliability electronics, including aerospace, medical devices, and telecommunications equipment. Its flat surface is ideal for fine-pitch components such as BGAs (Ball Grid Arrays) and QFNs (Quad Flat No-leads). In addition to PCBs, ENIG is employed in connectors, switches, and other components requiring durable, corrosion-resistant surfaces. The finish is also suitable for wire bonding applications due to its smoothness and conductivity. Industries with stringent quality requirements often specify ENIG for its consistent performance and longevity.
Safety and Storage
While ENIG-finished products are safe to handle, the plating process involves chemicals such as nickel salts and gold cyanide compounds, requiring proper safety measures. Workers should use gloves, goggles, and ventilation to prevent exposure. Finished ENIG PCBs should be stored in moisture-resistant packaging with desiccants to prevent oxidation or contamination. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals or extreme temperatures during storage. Proper handling ensures the finish retains its solderability and performance characteristics over time.
