Overview
Highly reactive microsilica, also known as silica fume, is a byproduct of silicon and ferrosilicon alloy production. It consists of ultrafine particles of amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and is prized for its high reactivity and pozzolanic properties. Physical and Chemical Properties

The material is chemically inert under normal conditions but reacts with calcium hydroxide in the presence of moisture to form calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), which enhances the strength and durability of concrete. It is also used in refractory materials to enhance thermal stability and in ceramics to improve sintering properties. Other applications include use in grouts, mortars, and high-performance coatings. Its ability to fill voids between cement particles makes it invaluable for producing ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC).

Microsilica poses a respiratory hazard if inhaled, so proper protective equipment such as masks and gloves should be used during handling. It should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent moisture absorption. Spills should be cleaned up promptly to avoid dust generation. In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with water and seek medical attention if irritation persists.
