High-Density Drilling Fluid (3.5-4.2 SG)
Overview
Barite (barium sulfate) is a naturally occurring mineral valued for its high specific gravity (3.5-4.2 g/cm³), making it indispensable in petroleum drilling operations. Over 80% of global production is consumed by the oil and gas industry as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. Its chemical inertness and non-magnetic properties ensure stable performance in downhole environments. Deposits are found worldwide, with China, India, and Morocco being leading producers. Commercial barite is typically beneficiated to achieve ≥4.1 SG for API-grade drilling applications. The mineral's whiteness and opacity also make it valuable in paints, plastics, and medical imaging.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Barite's defining characteristic is its exceptional density, derived from barium's high atomic weight (137.33). The crystalline structure (orthorhombic) contributes to its hardness (3-3.5 Mohs) and perfect cleavage. Chemically, it resists attack from acids (except hot concentrated sulfuric acid) and alkalis, maintaining stability in pH ranges from 3 to 14. Its low solubility in water (2.3 mg/L at 20°C) prevents unwanted dissolution in drilling systems. When ground, barite produces fine powders with bulk densities of 1.8-2.4 g/cm³. Thermal decomposition begins at 1,580°C, releasing sulfur oxides – a consideration for high-temperature applications.
Main Applications
In petroleum drilling, barite increases drilling mud density to balance formation pressures and prevent well blowouts. API 13A specifies ≥4.1 SG material with ≤250 ppm soluble alkaline earth metals. The 200-mesh (74 μm) grind size optimizes suspension while minimizing abrasion to equipment. Secondary uses include: radiation shielding (dense concrete), filler in automotive sound-deadening materials (30-40% loading), and barium meal contrast agents (medical-grade, 98% purity). Recent developments include nano-barite composites for advanced coatings and high-refractive-index glass applications.
Safety and Storage
While barite itself is non-toxic (LD50 >5000 mg/kg), prolonged dust inhalation may cause baritosis (benign pneumoconiosis). OSHA PEL is 15 mg/m³ (total dust) and 5 mg/m³ (respirable fraction). Use NIOSH-approved dust masks during handling and ensure adequate ventilation in processing areas. Store in moisture-resistant packaging (super sacks or 1.5-ton bulk bags) on pallets. Avoid contamination with soluble barium compounds (e.g., barium carbonate), which are toxic. In case of spills, collect mechanically – water flushing may spread the powder. Compatibility issues may arise with strong oxidizing agents.
B2B Procurement Guide
For drilling applications, prioritize API-certified suppliers with consistent 4.2+ SG material. Key specifications include: <3% residue on 325-mesh sieve, viscosity ≤125 cP (at 22% solids), and mercury content <1 ppm. Sample testing should confirm absence of magnetic minerals (affecting MWD tools). Logistics considerations: bulk shipments (25-30 MT trucks) reduce costs versus bagged product. For offshore operations, require moisture-proof packaging to prevent clumping. Price fluctuations correlate with oilfield activity – long-term contracts (6-12 months) often yield 5-10% savings. Emerging alternatives like hematite (SG 5.0) may be cost-effective in specific high-pressure wells.
