Heavy Duty Open Gear Grease

Updated: 2026-08-07

Overview

Heavy-duty open gear grease is a specialized lubricant formulated for industrial gear systems exposed to harsh operating conditions. Unlike conventional greases, it contains extreme pressure (EP) additives and tackifiers to withstand shock loading and prevent throw-off in open gear applications. These lubricants are engineered with high-viscosity base oils (mineral or synthetic) thickened with complex soap systems or polymers. Their unique rheological properties allow them to stay in place on vertical surfaces while providing long-term protection against wear and corrosion.

Physical and Chemical Properties

The grease typically exhibits a worked penetration of 400-450 (NLGI grade 00) for optimal pumpability and adhesion. It contains solid lubricants like graphite or molybdenum disulfide (5-10% concentration) to enhance load-carrying capacity under boundary lubrication conditions. Key chemical characteristics include high thermal stability (up to 150°C continuous service), excellent water resistance (ASTM D1264 test <5% washout), and strong corrosion protection (ASTM D1743 rating ≥A). The formulation often incorporates rust inhibitors, oxidation stabilizers, and anti-wear agents like zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP).

Main Applications

Primary applications include large-diameter open gears in ball mills, rotary kilns (cement/lime production), dragline excavators, and crushers in mining operations. The marine industry uses it for deck machinery gears exposed to seawater spray. In steel manufacturing, it lubricates the giant gears of continuous casters and rolling mills. The construction sector applies it to crawler crane slew rings and heavy-duty winches. Some formulations meet AGMA 251.02 and DIN 51517 Part 3 standards for industrial gear lubrication.

Safety and Storage

While generally non-hazardous, the grease may cause skin irritation with prolonged contact. Use nitrile gloves and protective eyewear during application. Contaminated clothing should be washed before reuse. Store drums in a dry, covered area away from direct sunlight. Bulk storage tanks should have temperature control to prevent oil separation. Shelf life is typically 2-3 years in unopened containers. Stir or homogenize if separation occurs before use.

B2B Procurement Guide

When sourcing, specify operating conditions: temperature range, presence of water/dust, gear speed (RPM), and load intensity. Request technical data sheets confirming four-ball weld load (≥2500N) and Timken OK load (≥45lbs) test results. For mining applications, verify MSHA approval if required. Consider application method (manual, spray, or centralized system) when selecting consistency. Bulk purchases (180kg drums or totes) typically offer 15-30% cost savings versus pails. Leading manufacturers include Lubrication Engineers, Mobil, and Chevron.
