Granular activated bleaching clay is a processed form of natural montmorillonite clay, treated with acids to enhance its adsorption properties. It is widely used in industrial applications due to its ability to remove impurities, pigments, and oxidation products from liquids. In edible oil refining, it decolorizes and deodorizes crude palm, soybean, and sunflower oils by adsorbing carotenoids and chlorophyll. Petrochemical plants use it to purify lubricants and paraffin waxes. Environmental applications include heavy metal removal from wastewater. Its granular form is preferred in fixed-bed reactors for continuous treatment processes, reducing operational downtime compared to powdered alternatives.
Safety and Storage
While non-toxic, prolonged exposure to dust may cause respiratory irritation. Storage in moisture-proof bags is essential to prevent clumping and loss of activity. Spent clay may contain adsorbed organic pollutants and should be disposed of as hazardous waste in compliance with local regulations. Regeneration via thermal treatment is possible but requires specialized equipment.
