Overview
Grafted LLDPE is a chemically modified version of linear low-density polyethylene where specific functional groups are attached to the polymer backbone through grafting reactions. This modification imparts new characteristics while retaining the base material's flexibility and processability. The grafting process typically involves radical reactions using peroxides to attach maleic anhydride, acrylic acid, or other monomers. The degree of grafting (usually 0.5-2%) significantly impacts the material's performance in applications requiring improved adhesion or compatibility.
Physical and Chemical Properties
The base properties of LLDPE remain largely intact after grafting, including its semi-crystalline structure and good impact resistance. Chemical resistance may be slightly reduced compared to pure LLDPE, particularly against polar solvents. The modified material shows enhanced thermal stability during processing due to the grafting process itself acting as a mild crosslinking treatment.

It's also used in tie layers for coextruded packaging and as a coupling agent in wood-plastic composites to enhance fiber-matrix adhesion.
Safety and Storage
As a modified polyolefin, grafted LLDPE presents low health risks under normal handling conditions. Dust generation during processing should be controlled through adequate ventilation as with all plastic pellets. Storage recommendations mirror those for standard LLDPE: keep in original packaging at temperatures below 40°C, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Shelf life typically exceeds 12 months when stored properly. Process residues may require special disposal consideration depending on local regulations for modified polymers.
