Fully Differential Amplifier
Overview
A fully differential amplifier is an essential building block in modern analog electronics, designed to handle differential signals throughout its signal path. Unlike single-ended amplifiers, FDAs maintain signal integrity by rejecting common-mode noise and interference through symmetrical signal processing. These amplifiers are implemented as integrated circuits (ICs) using advanced semiconductor processes, with performance characteristics tailored for specific applications ranging from audio processing to high-speed data transmission. The differential architecture inherently cancels even-order harmonics and provides superior power supply rejection.
Structure and Working Principle
The FDA consists of matched transistor pairs arranged in differential configurations at both input and output stages. Input signals are applied across two terminals (IN+ and IN-), while outputs are taken differentially between OUT+ and OUT- terminals. Internal circuitry typically includes current mirrors, active loads, and common-mode feedback networks to maintain stability. The amplifier's core operation relies on maintaining precise symmetry between the two signal paths, with any imbalance degrading the common-mode rejection performance. Modern implementations often include on-chip resistors for feedback networks and built-in common-mode voltage control.

High common-mode rejection ratio (typically 60-100 dB) is the hallmark feature, enabling operation in electrically noisy environments. FDAs offer wide bandwidth (up to several GHz in high-speed versions) with excellent linearity across the frequency range. Power efficiency is another advantage, as differential operation allows for lower supply voltages compared to equivalent single-ended designs. The balanced output swing provides twice the signal amplitude of single-ended amplifiers at the same supply voltage.
Application Areas
Data acquisition systems extensively use FDAs as analog front-ends for high-resolution ADCs, where they provide anti-aliasing filtering and signal conditioning. In medical electronics, they amplify biopotential signals like ECG and EEG while rejecting interference from power lines and other equipment. High-speed communication systems employ FDAs in differential line drivers and receivers for protocols like LVDS. Industrial applications include sensor interfaces for strain gauges, thermocouples, and bridge sensors where long cable runs introduce significant common-mode noise.
Maintenance and Precautions
Proper PCB layout is critical - maintain symmetry in differential traces and use ground planes to minimize parasitic effects. Power supply pins require adequate decoupling (typically 0.1μF ceramic capacitors placed close to the package). Thermal management becomes important in high-speed applications; thermal pads or heatsinks may be necessary for packages dissipating over 500mW. Avoid exceeding maximum differential input voltage specifications, which can vary from ±0.7V to ±6V depending on the device.
