Overview
Flame retardant polyamide (FR-PA) is an engineered thermoplastic modified with additives to inhibit combustion. Unlike standard polyamides, it self-extinguishes when exposed to flame, making it critical for applications where fire safety is paramount. The material combines polyamide's inherent strength and chemical resistance with enhanced fire performance. Common flame retardants include phosphorus-based compounds and mineral fillers, with halogen-free formulations gaining popularity due to environmental regulations.
Physical and Chemical Properties
FR-PA retains polyamide's mechanical robustness (tensile strength: 70-90 MPa) while achieving UL94 V-0 ratings—the highest flame classification. Its heat deflection temperature ranges 180-220°C, suitable for under-hood automotive parts. Chemically, it resists oils and fuels but degrades in strong alkalis. The flame retardant additives may slightly reduce impact strength compared to standard PA, requiring impact modifiers in some grades. Electrical properties (CTI >600V) make it ideal for circuit breakers.

Over 60% of FR-PA is used in electrical components like switchgear housings and relay bases, where its dielectric strength prevents short circuits. Automotive applications include battery trays and charge inlet connectors in EVs. In construction, it's processed into fire-resistant cable sheathing and public transport interior panels. Emerging uses include 3D-printed prototypes for aerospace, where weight savings and fire safety are critical.
Safety and Storage
While FR-PA itself is stable, combustion products may contain hydrogen cyanide (HCN) or phosphorus oxides. Processing requires local exhaust ventilation to manage potential fumes during injection molding. Storage should prevent moisture absorption (max. 0.2% humidity) to maintain properties. Bulk bags must be kept sealed and palletized away from heat sources. Shelf life typically exceeds 24 months in proper conditions.
