Flame Ionization Detector
Overview
The Flame Ionization Detector (FID) is a workhorse analytical instrument in gas chromatography, first commercialized in the 1950s. It detects virtually all organic compounds containing carbon-hydrogen bonds through combustion in a hydrogen/air flame. The FID's exceptional sensitivity (detecting picogram-per-second levels) and wide linear dynamic range make it indispensable for quantitative analysis. Unlike other detectors, FIDs are destructive – samples are burned during analysis. They are particularly valued in petroleum, environmental, and pharmaceutical industries for their reliability and minimal maintenance requirements. A standard FID consists of a stainless steel body housing the burner assembly, collector electrode, and igniter.
