Expanded PTFE (ePTFE) gaskets are engineered from polytetrafluoroethylene through a proprietary expansion process, creating a microporous structure with unique sealing properties. Unlike traditional PTFE, the expanded version offers exceptional conformability to irregular surfaces while retaining chemical resistance. Developed in the 1970s, these gaskets revolutionized sealing solutions for aggressive media in industries where conventional materials fail. Their microstructure consists of interconnected fibrils and nodes, providing both flexibility and memory to recover from compression. Physical and Chemical Properties

The semiconductor industry uses them for ultrapure gas handling due to minimal particle generation. Other key uses include compressor seals in LNG plants (cryogenic performance), heat exchanger gaskets in power generation, and emissions control flanges in scrubbers. Their electrical insulation properties (dielectric strength >10 kV/mm) suit them for transformer seals. Safety and Storage
While PTFE is biologically inert, thermal decomposition above 400°C releases toxic fumes including perfluoroisobutene (PFIB). Adequate ventilation is mandatory during high-temperature processing. Normal handling requires no special PPE beyond gloves to prevent contamination. Storage should avoid direct sunlight to prevent UV degradation over extended periods. Rolls or sheets must lie flat to prevent permanent deformation; stacking height should not exceed 30 cm. For critical applications, shelf life is typically 5 years when stored at <40°C and <60% humidity. Avoid contact with sharp edges during transport to prevent tearing the porous structure.
