Cyclopentadiene (CPD) is a cyclic hydrocarbon with two conjugated double bonds, making it a versatile building block in organic chemistry. First isolated from coal tar, it is now predominantly synthesized through thermal cracking of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD). Its reactive nature enables diverse transformations, particularly in polymer and coordination chemistry. Industrial production typically yields CPD as a byproduct of ethylene manufacturing.
