Overview
ECTFE is a semi-crystalline copolymer of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene, combining the chemical resistance of fluoropolymers with improved mechanical properties. Developed as an alternative to PTFE and PVDF, it offers unique advantages in extreme environments. The material is produced through suspension or emulsion polymerization processes. First commercialized in the 1970s under the trade name Halar, ECTFE has become essential for industries requiring materials that withstand aggressive chemicals while maintaining structural integrity at temperatures up to 150°C continuous service. Physical and Chemical Properties

Safety and Storage
While ECTFE is generally safe to handle, thermal decomposition above 300°C releases hydrogen fluoride and hydrochloric acid—requiring proper ventilation during processing. Finished products pose minimal risk under normal conditions. Workers should use standard PPE when machining or welding ECTFE components. Raw material should be stored in original packaging below 30°C with <50% humidity to prevent moisture absorption. Prolonged UV exposure before processing may affect mechanical properties. Regrind material should be limited to 20% of feedstock to maintain quality. Firefighting for ECTFE requires dry chemical or CO2 extinguishers.
