Overview
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an inorganic compound prized for its exceptional brightness and high refractive index, making it the most widely used white pigment globally. It exists in two primary crystalline forms: rutile (more stable) and anatase (higher photocatalytic activity). The material is chemically inert, non-toxic, and resistant to UV degradation, which has led to its adoption in industries ranging from coatings to food packaging. Its production involves either the sulfate or chloride process, with the latter yielding higher-purity rutile-grade TiO2.
Physical and Chemical Properties

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies TiO2 as a Group 2B carcinogen (possibly carcinogenic) when inhaled as powder. Storage requires protection from moisture to prevent caking. Bulk bags should be stacked no more than 5 layers high. Incompatible with strong reducing agents and alkali metals.
